What is the Association of ¹ū¶³“«Ć½Ö±²„ĢżColleges (AFC)?
The Association of ¹ū¶³“«Ć½Ö±²„ Colleges, Inc. is the professional association of ¹ū¶³“«Ć½Ö±²„’s 28 public member institutions of the ¹ū¶³“«Ć½Ö±²„ College System, their boards, employees, retirees, and associates, and the employees of the Division of ¹ū¶³“«Ć½Ö±²„ Colleges. The mission of the Association is to actively promote, represent, and support members and institutions as they provide their students and the citizens of ¹ū¶³“«Ć½Ö±²„ with a world-class college system.
History of AFC
AFC was organized in 1949 as the ¹ū¶³“«Ć½Ö±²„ Association of Public Junior Colleges by the presidents of ¹ū¶³“«Ć½Ö±²„’s first four public community colleges. Its mission was to unite the colleges for the purpose of helping the ¹ū¶³“«Ć½Ö±²„ Legislature understand the Junior College and to advocate for ¹ū¶³“«Ć½Ö±²„’s public community colleges in the development of the state’s long-range plan for higher education.
Since 1949, AFC’s mission and purposes have grown in scope as has the association itself. In 1971, the association changed its name to the ¹ū¶³“«Ć½Ö±²„ Association for Community Colleges and is the most unique organization serving any community college system in the nation. In 2010, it became the Association of ¹ū¶³“«Ć½Ö±²„ Colleges to reflect the growth of numerous community college members into state colleges. Today, all 28 ofĢż¹ū¶³“«Ć½Ö±²„ās state and community colleges support the work of AFC through institutional dues as do 8,100 college employees through individual memberships and the sharing of their talents, time and energy.
